Class work

The lighting on Daniel Radcliffe’s face is quite light, which could connote that he the hero, but on the rest of his body the lighting is dark. This could connote that he may also be the villain. He is wearing a white shirt and a black waistcoat, which again could show that he’s good and evil.  His facial expression shows that he looks scared or even demented.

The entire picture is black and white, darker in some areas and lighter in others. It looks as if it’s set in a cemetery because of the large tree and the cross behind him. In front of the cross, there is a mysterious person in black, which links with the title ‘The Woman in Black’. The person at the back could be the woman in the title, which shows that the producer is trying to hint out what the narrative is about.  There is quite a lot of smoke in the background which gives a chilling feel and a dark and dangerous feel to it. The colouring is very dark and this is conventional with the thriller genre and gives a scary and frightening feel to it. The uses of whites, blacks and greys are really effective in the sense that it is conventional with a ghost story. The imagery raises questions about the character such as who is he? Why is he scared? Is he scared? Who is the person in the smoke? This makes the reader intrigued.

The positioning of the text is not in line with the rest of the text which is suitable for the genre because it is natural for the text to be in line with each line however as these lines are not in line it is unnatural just like a ghost is unnatural.

The way the clouds are lined up and the use of the tree and cemetery helps create that scary atmosphere, as cemeteries are known for being a scary place to go to, especially in the night. There aren’t many props used in this scene, as the setting helps to set the scary atmosphere.
