Media Forms Analysis

Album Cover and Website
What are the main similarities and why? Effect on audience..
What are the main differences and why? Effect on audience..

The word 'Ill' is placed as tower blocks, so the narrative may link to estates and the estate rough life. The way 'ill' is placed on the poster may suggest that the characters may live there and that's where the film is set. Setting is presented as the central theme of the cover. He could be rapping about the estate life and what occurs in the film. The logo that has Plan B's name in it, shows the creative side of him and the logo is of a cutter type thing, which can connote that knifes may be involved in the storyline. They are both placed at the top of the media text, which shows the importance it has towards Plan and the film. This will let the audience know that Plan B is a big part of the production of the film and it may suggest to them that some of the events that occur in the film, may have happened to him in real life.

On the Album Cover, Plan B is sitting on a wall, smoking. Plan B looks very 'hood', he looks like he doesn't care about his appearance  This connotes that characters in the film may be doing so, which also lets the audience know the film is very explicit. In the background, you can see estate blocks, which links to the narrative. The characters may be living there during the film. On the website, you can some of the characters that are in the film. One of the characters is wearing a tracksuit, which links to what Plan B was wearing on the Album Cover. The outfits that they are wearing, could meet the stereotypes, that people who live on estates are 'chavs' and are wearing tracksuits. There is a gang of people in the background, which could be meeting the stereotypes that gangs live in estates and are very rough people.

On the Album Cover, Plan B is smoking which can reveal that the characters in the film, may do so. This shows the audience that they can see that the film will be explicit about drugs. Also, the smoking is an iconic prop in these 'British urban' films, so the audience will automatically be able to recognise the props being used and not be offended  as they will be use to seeing that. Also, In the background, you can see estate blocks, which shows the audience that it might link to the location of the film. This can allow the audience to see that it may show what the 'estate' life is about and how people deal with their every day problems. However on the website, there is a gang in the background, which may be the characters in the film, that are wearing tracksuits and hoods. This is also an iconic prop that is popular with the British public, the audience will automatically be able to recognise it. This is also a stereotypical look, as most gangs wear tracksuits and hoods, so it reinforces the stereotype.

On the website, the estate blocks are placed behind the characters and may be a back drop, to show that audience that they all live in the estates, and have a 'estate life'. This can connote that they have rough lives and that is how people living the 'estate life' are stereotyped. They are all posing in a way which makes them look like a gang that will commit crimes, and this can link to the that fact that they have no manners - 'manors ill'. This allows the audience to see that they lack manners and this is because of the 'estate life'.

Pictures of the Setting

We have chosen this location for our opening sequence as they meet the stereotypical views that we are trying to show to our audience. Our main character is from a black background and he lives in a estate, which meets the stereotype that black people that live in estates have a rough life. The estate looks very empty, which is good, as we want to create that atmosphere for the audience. When we shoot our sequence, we will shoot a view of the entire estate, so that the audience can see what its like, what kind of atmosphere is being set.

MEST 2 Creating Media: Research & Planning

90210
In the beginning of the two-minute opening sequence the audience are forced to stare at the character (female) walking towards the camera, then she starts a conversation with a male character. A long shot is used whilst she is walking, as this allows the audience to see her body language and her facial expressions. Then a medium shot is used whilst they are having a conversation, this allows the audience to see their facial expressions. Then a over the shoulder shot is used whilst Naomi and Austin are talking, it gets reversed whenever the other person is talking. This allows the audience to see their facial expressions and how they are feeling whilst having a conversation. She throws her bag to Austin, and she runs out the airport. A long shot is used which shows her running, this emphasises how important it is for her to get to where she has to be. A long shot is used to show that she is stuck in traffic, the camera pans across cars. A medium shot is then used from in front of the car, which shows her facial expressions whilst she is on the phone. She then throws her phone onto the next seat, and puts her glasses on, a medium shot is still being used. She gets frustrated and drives onto the path way. A long shot is used to show how fast she is driving and what other people's expressions are.

Waterloo RoadA point of view shot is used to show where she is and a long shot is used after to show that she is walking towards her room. A medium shot is used to show what she does when she goes into the room. She turns on the radio and goes to talk to the other girl. A close up is used of her face, when she looks at what the other girl is doing. This is done so that the audience can see her facial expressions are. A close up is used of the girl on the bed, to see her facial expressions when she drops the drink on her work, you can see she is angry with the other woman. They start having a conversation but over the shoulder shots aren't being used during the conversation. The camera just pans across when the older woman talks and then pans back to the younger woman. The woman in the blue tracksuit then gets aggressive towards the younger woman, and gets up and gets in her face. A over the shoulder shot is used to see the woman's facial expressions. An extreme close up is used to show how important her speech is and her facial expressions towards the younger girl. It shows that the woman doesn't like her and is showing aggressive behavior towards her.

Pretty Little Liars
A medium shot is used to see all the characters in the shot but also to see their body and facial language, so the audience can see who is saying what. Then a close up is used to show that her speech is important and the audience can see her facial expressions. As the she is having a conversation with her friend, an over the shoulder shot is used to show her facial expressions. The camera then looks at her other friend, to show that she is now speaking. The camera looks back and forth at the two characters, as this may show that what they are saying has importance to the topic they are taking about. The camera goes back to a medium shot of all the girls, then camera pans back and forth to the three girls to the one girl standing by herself. When the girl with her hair tied back starts talking, a close up shot is used to show her facial expressions and to show that her speech has importance. When the bell rings a long shot is used as they walk out of the toilets. As they are walking out of the toilet, they see two woman talking and rush back into the toilet. When the two woman are talking a long shot is used to see where they are and their body language. When they rush back into the toilet, they all start panicking and a medium shot is used to show their facial expressions and how they are reacting.

One Tree Hill
A medium shot is used to show the window sill being egged. The camera zooms in slowly, when the egg hits the window you can see the woman's reaction inside and she goes up to the window and see's who it is and runs outside. The camera fades to the woman throwing the eggs, a medium shot is used to show her throwing the eggs. A long shot is used to show when the woman runs out her house, and then it cuts to the other woman, whilst they have a conversation. An over the shoulder shot is used when they are having a conversation, and then the shot changes to a close up, which shows her facial expressions. A shot/reverse shot is used during their conversation, which shows their facial expressions. Then the camera cuts to the bag on the ground, as she reaches for something in the bag, the camera zooms in and then a medium shot is used to show what she gets out the bag and then changes to a long shot, as she throws the ornament at the house. Then a medium shot is used to show the woman's facial expression, as she looks surprised and shocked that her house is being attacked.

Vampire Diaries
The girl is lying on her bed, and a medium shot is used to show her facial expressions, and she looks like she is struggling. She gets up and a medium shot is still being used to, as she realizes her friend is watching her sleep. The camera changes to a long shot, from a side view of them two sitting on the bed, this allows the audience to see what is going on. He tries to comfort her as she had a nightmare. A close up is then used to show her facial expressions, and a shot reverse shot is used during their conversation, which allows the audience to see both of their facial expressions. A close up is being used during their conversation and then changes to a medium shot of the woman, as she looks scared. She becomes restless and then another male suddenly comes out of nowhere and interferes in their conversation. A close up is used when he starts talking.

Institution

BBC Three is a television network from the BBC broadcasting via digital cable, terrestrial, ITV and satellite platforms. The channels target audience includes those in 16-34 year old age group, and has the purpose of providing innovative content to younger audiences, by focusing on new talent and new technologies. The channel is on-air from 19:00 to around 05:00 each night.BBC Three was launched by Stuart Murphy, who previously ran BBC Choice.Targeting an audience of 16-34 year olds, BBC three has to compete with there rivals in order such as ITV2 and E4, for an audience that the BBC has traditionally had difficulty in attracting. On average nine million people watch BBC Three every week.

BBC Three's programming consists of comedy, drama, spin-off series, which would attract many audiences as they may have missed out a show and want to catch up upon it later during the day and other programmes that attempt to alert others of their actions through a series of programmes challenging common beliefs.

Pre-watershed shows are held before 9pm, which are shows which have no swearing, nudity and this would be beneficial for the young viewers.
However, these shows change everyday, there isn't a fixed timing for some of these shows as on some days snog marry or avoid is shown at 21.00, which shows there is no fixed timing, suggesting audiences won't be aware of what time to expect a programme to be on, however this could also be a positive outcome as young audiences flick through the channels and don't usually stick to one, also having films shown on some days would attract them even more, especially on the weekend as that is when they want to relax.

BBC three has many different shows at different timings, there are suitable shows that we could look at for our teen drama, which are pre-watershed as we could get information and new techniques which may help us with our drama, also the target audience for bbc three ranges from 16-34 years, but we need to aim ours at young teenagers, so we could research more about the young teenager shows in order to help us

Research

My group's idea is about a 16 year old teenager called Mathew, who lives in an estate with his mum,who acts different with his family and different in front of his friends. The opening scene is of him getting ready to go to school. He goes to a private school, whilst he is getting ready, he is listening to rap/hip hop music. He hears his mum walking up the stairs, so he quickly changes it to the news. His mum walks in and tells him to hurry up and get downstairs. She walks back downstairs and he switches the TV off and grabs his back and goes downstairs. He has his breakfast and then says to his mum that he is leaving. He walks out the door, and as soon as he slams the door behind him, hip hop music starts (non-diegetic). The music starts and he walks around the corner of his estate, and opens a box, and finds his clothes. He gets changed into a black tracksuit, and his image completely changes. He starts bopping towards his bike, and gets on it and rides off. He then goes to meet his friends. His friends are the stereotypical hood boys, they are wearing track suits, hats, smoking. They start a conversation and his friends give him a bag, and then a police car rolls up next to them. His friends then push him of his bike, and run off. The police grab Mathew and floor him and check the bag. They put hand cuffs around his wrists and tell him he is under arrest.

We are going to be filming in an estate called Smith Farm We are using this estate, so it enforces the stereotypical views and it will go well with the genre of our work. We will be filming at this location throughout the entire scenes.

Video Analysis

This video has a range of different shots and editing, to make it seem high quality for the audience. Most of the video consists of a female character walking the corridors  throughout these scenes, there are a number of cuts, as she is seen walking from different angles: high and low. This makes a tension build-up, which may engage the audience into the storyline.

A point of view shot is also used to make the audience feel engaged with the character also it lets them see what kind of atmosphere is being created. It allows the audience to see from the characters point of view, which adds to the tension of scene, and this may make the audience suspicious that something bad may happen. She walks to a door, and then the camera changes to inside the classroom. Then she meets a male character, who is sitting in chair, which looks suspicious, as his back is turned to the audience. This will make the audience wonder who he is and why they are meeting.

During the conversation between the two characters, a 180 rule is used, which allows the audience to see the entire scene and lets them see what kind of atmosphere they are in. You can see over whichever character is speaking, this allows the audience to see the other characters' facial expressions. We also used a over-the-head shoulder shot, which allows the audience to see the conversation in more depth and the scene looks more accurate. Low key lighting is used when the male character introduces himself. The camera tilts from his shoes up to his face, which creates suspicion that he may be the villain of the story. When he turns around, the lighting shadows his face, making him seem as the villain of the story, also the audience will be more engaged as they will be wondering who this character is and how he is linked to the female.

Magazine image

This is the image I would put on my front cover of my magazine, as my magazine is a hair and beauty magazine. This picture shows healthy hair and a young women with clear skin, this shows that the magazine may include tips on how to keep your hair healthy and your skin clear. Her hair is brown, medium length, most young women have this type of hair so it will aim to many females and this will attract them to buy the magazine. In the magazone, there can be advertisements on how to keep your hair healthy and clean, as most women will aim for their hair and skin to be healthy as possible.

Media Award Video Analysis

The Paper Boy

The Paper Boy is set in a school, as in the beginning of the trailer there are kids in their uniform walking in a school, showing the scenery behind them. There is a scene when a group of boys are bullying another child. This scene is in black and white, which represents a flashback and creates suspense, as the audience will be wondering what happened. The music is non-diegetic, which adds to the suspense of what will happen. When the group of boys are bullying the boy, a long shot it used to show what they actually do to the boy and show the facial expressions of the other people in the shot.

The lighting used was low-key lighting, which contrasted well with what the issue was, bullying was obviously the issue and the audience can easily tell. During the trailer, it says 'the past will haunt you', and a paper boy is shown outside a car window, this tells the audience that there is something mysterious about the boy and he may be seeking revenge.

Inner Redemption

At first, due to the music and the acting you think that its a romance, but during the trailer it changes to a horror. This a hybrid, which makes the audience wonder what will happen next. The girl and boy act as if they are going to have a relationship  but when she comes to the door with blood on her hands, the audience can tell that's when the genre has changed. The music changed when the genre changed as well, which added to the effect it had to the audience. A nursery rhyme comes on, which confuses the audience, but also makes them wonder what will happen next.

A scene which added to the horror genre was at the end when the girl was turning her neck and you could a 'click click' sound every time she titled her head. This created suspense as the audience will get scared, and wonder what will happen to the girl. The props used in this scene added to create the tense atmosphere for the audience..

Fish Tank Review

Fish Tank Review

Director: Andrea Arnold. She has also directed Red Road and Wasp and Dog.

Main stars: Katie Jarvis, Micheal Fassbender and Kierston Wareing

Katie Jarvis has starred in a TV series called 'Perfect Day'. Kierston Wareing has starred in two TV series. Also starred in the film 'Its a Free World' and 'Rise of the Footsoldier. Micheal Fassbender has starred in '300', 'Agatha Christie'. He has also starred in the films 'Inglorious Bastards, 'Jonah Hex'.

Plot: The story is about a teenager who is stuck in this low class lifestyle and is trying to escape. There is a white horse in the film, which Mia connects with and try's to help it escape as it is tied down. This relates to her lifestyle, showing that she is tied down and wont be able to escape her life, and will have to accept it. She has dance talents, but is unable to do anything with them, as she cant get anywhere with her lifestyle. Also, in the end of them film when Mia is leaving, her mother and her younger sister do a dance together, which connotes that they may lead the same life and cannot escape a low class lifestyle no matter what they do.

Characters: Kierston Wareing plays the character Joanne, Mia's mother. Her acting was good, she showed real emotion throughout the film, especially when she had scenes with Mia.

Katie Jarvis plays the character Mia. Her acting skills were really good, she showed real emotion and allowed the audience to see what it would feel like to be in that situation. Sometimes I got confused with her emotions, I didn't really know what was going on.

Micheal Fassbender plays the character Connor, the boyfriend. He is a family man, who comes to Mia and her mother when he wants to change lifestyles. He was very good in showing his emotions and was convincing when he tried to portray himself as the good guy. The audience can see when he had feelings towards Mia and her mother, which allowed the audience to guess what was going to happen.

Genre: I think that the genre was Drama. The film revolved around a young girls life and how she gets through the struggles. There are moments which involve family life, for example I think most of the drama came from Mia and her mother.

Soundtrack: The music was parallel to what was being shown on the screen, for example when she was dancing in the room by herself, she was upset.

Audience: I think that this film is targeted to teenagers who are in similar situations and have a similar lifestyle to Mia. They will be able to connect with Mia and feel comfortable knowing that they aren't the only ones going through a rough time. Allowing the audience to see how others deal with their pain and anger, and may be follow them.

Analysis of a magazine cover

Title of publication: It is placed at the top of the cover and even though Mila Kunis' head is covering half of it, the magazine is well known so the audience will know which magazine it is.Wherever the magazine is placed on the shelf space, it will be recognised. It is written in bold capital letters, which will be visible to the audience.
Slogan:
Central image: The central image is of Mila Kunis, a famous actress. This is a strong image, as she is giving direct mode of address, which allows the magazine to connect with the audience, and will attract women and men. The 'flash' relates to the image as she has a flat belly, she may be giving tips to the audience of how to get her figure. The central image could  attract both a female and male audience.
'Flash': The flash is 'flatten your belly', this may link to Mila Kunis as she has a flat belly, she may be giving advice on how to get that image. That flash is the biggest one, and there are smaller ones surrounding the cover such as '25 ways to have fun with him'.
Free offer:
Colour scheme: The colours used are black, white, yellow and the background is pink. The pink could show that the target audience are females. The black and white could suggest the 'bold' audience. Combining these colours creates an impression that will attract the audience.
Name/Game checks:
Language: The language used on the cover is simple and straight to the point. Short words are used so that the audience wont get bored when reading the cover. They will want to be attracted to what is written otherwise they will ignore it.
Competitions:
Direct address & asking questions: '8 things you must tell your gyno' this allows the audience to be drawn in, and wonder what they have to know.
Bar code, date & price: The price is written in the top right hand corner in bold writing, which allows the audience to see how much it is and whether it is worth it.
The 'real' target audience: Cosmopolitan is aimed at females 25-35, as they will be working and wanting to keep fit. But a younger audience may read the magazine, as they may be interested in the topics.

Justin Bieber's film is a documentary film, which shows how he became famous and how people helped him become the person he is now. High-key lighting is used to to show the audience that the movie is happy and not scary.  It shows scenes of him performing at his concerts, which allows the audience to listen to his music and at the same time promote the music. Cinematography: Analysing 2 Extracts

The Pink Panther (1963)

The film is about a French police inspector called Clouseau, who tires to catch the Phantom, a daring jewel thief, whose identity and features are unknown- and is acting right under his nose.
When the trailer starts, it is a medium shot of the animated pink panther looking a a film reel, and a voice over is talking to him. He then asks who is in the film. David Niven is then shown, in a medium shot, of him hiding behind the curtain and then comes out, which shows him putting a mask on. This shows enables the audience to see his facial expressions and body language

The next scene is a long shot of a man going up the stairs and Peter Sellers comes around the stairs and pours a liquid onto the floor. This a long shot, which allows the audience to see his body language and facial expressions.
Moreover, there is a conversation between the inspector and another detective, which lets the audience see their facial expressions. The inspector then falls onto the ground, as he spins a globe too fast.

Afterwards, we can see a medium shot of two people having a conversation. You get to see the persons point of view when they are having a conversation, this allows the audience to engage in the conversation and see their facial expressions. Low-key lighting is used, which creates a romantic atmosphere. As we see a shot/reverse/shot and it slowly zooms into their faces. There are mainly close up shots used in this trailer, to show characters facial expressions clearly.

It's a Wonderful Life (1946)

It's a Wonderful Life is about an angel who helps frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he never existed.

There are many different shots used in this trailer which allow the audience to engage and feel how the characters are feeling.  When he is introduced, there is a close-up which allows us to see how he is feeling. There is a medium shot when we can see the main character, this allows us to see his facial expressions clearly. During this scene, high-key lighting is used to show him as superior to everyone else.

Also, many long shots are used to show the surroundings around the the characters, for example a woman walks in and a long shot is used to shows her surroundings and also show her body language. A medium shot is used when a couple are dancing and then the camera zooms out and it becomes a long shot, as they jump into the water. High-key lighting is used to create a fun atmosphere, as they are all happy and there is a party going on.

Key Differences between 'It's a Wonderful Life' & 'Pink Panther'

Both of the films have various things in common such as they both use different camera angles and movement, they both use close-up's in their trailers. Whereas, in Pink Panther, mostly close-up's are used to show the characters facial expressions clearly. Also, in It's a Wonderful Life, they use mostly long shots to show the surroundings of the characters. Long shots are probably used more as there are more people and they wanted to show the atmosphere around them.

A main difference between the two trailers, is that 'Pink Panther' is in colour and 'It's a Wonderful Life' is in black and white. In 'Pink Panther', the colour shows more realistic scenarios and the different types of lighting allows the colour to balance. Whereas, in 'It's a Wonderful Life', the black and white allows the audience to see the different atmosphere's around the characters

Another difference, is the typography. There is more typography in 'It's a Wonderful Life', which connotes that they didn't have much equipment to use different skills for the typography. There is more sound in 'Pink Panther', which allows the audience to engage with the storyline and see who the characters are.

Analysing 4 still images

Taken 2
Taken 2 recently came out and it is an action film. Firstly, the typography is written in bold and is red, this could connote that the movie has something to do with blood and violence.Another effect on using the colour red, is that is stands out from the rest of the poster, as it is the only thing in colour. Using capital letters for the title, connotes the emphasise on the word 'TAKEN', it could mean that someone or something may be 'taken' in the film.
The shots used in the background are in black and white, which creates mystery in the audiences minds, as they are forced to think why it is in that colour. As, black and white connote various things such as, mystery, fear and a gloomy atmosphere. It is also used when there are a lot of emotions, so this could be a clue to the audience

There is a long shot of the main character, which is on the side of the poster, this connotes his importance, as he is the only one on the poster who has a long shot and his entire body is shown. It also shows his body language and how he is dressed. He is wearing all black, which connotes how important he is and he is very passionate about what he is going to do. The iconography used is the gun in his hand, which connotes that this movie has violence and his motive may be to kill someone. The gun gives away many clues to the audience, which gets them thinking about what the movie may be about. Having the gun in his hand may suggest to the audience that he may be the protagonist, as a gun is seen as a weapon of evil. His facial expressions show that he looks worried, which connotes he may be thinking about what he is going to do or he is upset about someone being 'taken'.

In the background, there is a medium shot used for the woman running in the rain. The shot allows you to see her facial expressions and her body language. She is running and she looks afraid, which connotes that someone may be after her. This shot adds to the mystery, as the audience will want to know who she is running away from. Low-key lighting is used in the background, which connotes the mystery. The shot used for the second shot is a medium shot, which shows the man pointing a gun at someone. His facial expressions show that he very angry, this connotes that he is may be angry at the person who he is shooting. The iconography of the gun, shows the audience that he is a protagonist and that he may be shooting an enemy. Low-key lighting is used again, to show emphasise on the man and what he is doing. In the final shot, there is a close-up shot used to show the facial expressions on the woman's face. The woman looks worried, which shows that she may have been 'taken' or someone close to her has been. The use of these three shots show the audience that the characters in these shots, are the main characters of the film.

Bride Wars
Bride Wars came out in 2009 and it is a comedy. Firstly, the typography is in black fancy writing and in red bold writing. The fancy writing connotes that the movie is going to be a 'chick flick' and the movie is about the two characters on the poster. 'Bride Wars' is in fancy writing and in red bold writing, the same applies for the characters names at the top of the poster. The word 'wars' is in red bold capital writing, which connotes that a war may occur between two brides. In between the two characters it says 'Even best friends cant share the same wedding day', this shows the audience that the two women on the poster are best friends, and that they are getting married but something comes between them.

The shot used is a medium shot, the shot is above their waist's and shows the facial expressions. Kate Hudson's is wearing a wedding dress and her facial expressions show that she is looking directly at Anne Hathaway, and has a smirk on her face. Her make -up is done nicely and she has a cake cutter in her hand, which pointing towards Anne. The smirk connotes that she thinks she is going to have a better wedding than, which gets the audience thinking what that something is.

Anne Hathaway also has a wedding dress on, her make-up is done nicely and she has cake cake cutter pointing towards Kate. Her facial expressions show that she has a smirk on her face, which connotes that she may have outdone Kate on her wedding. The typography in between both the characters, suggests that they may have booked their weddings on the same day and are now competing for the venue. High-key lighting is used to show the facial expressions and what they are wearing.

Sinister
Sinister also came out recently and it is a horror. Firstly, the typography is in scary, bold, spaced out writing. The connotes that the movie will be scary, as the writing is related to the horror genre. The writing looks as if it has been painted onto the wall, which is why it looks as if it is running down the wall. Underneath, 'Sinister', it says 'Once you see him, nothing can save you', this connotes that the movie may have a ghost or a haunted figure in the movie. Above 'Sinister', it says 'from the producer of Paranormal Activity and Insidious', this shows that the film will be scary as, the previous films were.

It is a medium shot of a young girl wearing her pyjamas, dragging her hand, which has blood on it, across the wall. This connotes that the girl has something to do with the storyline, as she is the only character in the poster. There is a lot of blood on the wall, and there is a face in the blood. This connotes that the face in the blood, could be the thing that haunts the girl or her family. The fact that she is facing the wall, connotes that she may be scared of the figure in the blood. She is wearing her pyjamas, connoting that she may be getting scared whilst she is sleeping, someone may be haunting her in her dreams and is affecting the way she is when she is awake.

The blood is red. The colour red is associated with death, danger and fear. The face in the blood, connotes that the person could be after the girl, as she may have something they want. Low-key lighting is used to emphasise the atmosphere that is created.

21 Jump Street
21 Jump Street came out in March and it is a comedy. The typography is bold white and red writing, red connotes danger and white connotes innocence. This could mean that they have to do something dangerous. Above '21 Jump Street', its says 'the only thing getting blown tonight is their cover', which connotes that the two characters on the poster may be going undercover as other people. The word 'jump' is the only typography that is in the colour red, this connotes that the storyline may have something to do with jumping into a dangerous situation. As there are only two characters in the poster, they are probably the main characters of the film.

A long shot is used to show the main characters and their body language. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are standing back to back, which connotes that they may not get along.  They are wearing suits, which shows that they are sophisticated. Their facial expressions show that they are serious about what they are about to do. In the background, there is a banner that says 'senior prom', this shows that they may be going back to school undercover or may have to go and stop a senior prom. They have guns in their hands, this iconography relates to action films. Also, the fact that they are wearing suits and standing in front of the decorations connotes that something dangerous is going to happen during their senior prom, and they are going to stop it.

Beginning of Kidulthood (Ms Rodden)

At the beginning of Kidulthood, its set in a school which shows that the movie will be based on young teenagers. Also, you get to see the main characters, as the camera focuses on different characters with different story lines  The atmosphere shows young teenagers as ‘hoodlums’, which is how they are stereotyped by society. Teenagers are seen smoking, beating up each other and swearing. Society has stereotyped teenagers as people who swear, smoke and be disruptive towards other members of the society. The beginning of the movie is showing exactly how other people think of young teenagers, which doesn't challenge it.
