Beginning of Kidulthood (Ms Rodden)

At the beginning of Kidulthood, its set in a school which shows that the movie will be based on young teenagers. Also, you get to see the main characters, as the camera focuses on different characters with different story lines  The atmosphere shows young teenagers as ‘hoodlums’, which is how they are stereotyped by society. Teenagers are seen smoking, beating up each other and swearing. Society has stereotyped teenagers as people who swear, smoke and be disruptive towards other members of the society. The beginning of the movie is showing exactly how other people think of young teenagers, which doesn't challenge it.

  1. WWW: There is some analysis and reference to the text.
EBI: This is late and not up to the necessary standard of a Year 12 student.
LR: Does the opening of Kidulthood challenge or reinforce the dominant ideologies of society? Please re-write this in the following way: Analyse the mise-en-scene from the opening 5 mins of the film and apply C.L.A.M.P.S: how the Costumes, Lighting, Actors, Make-up, Props and Setting in the opening reinforce or challenge the dominant ideology of society.
Write a P.E.A.E.L (POINT, EVIDENCE, ANALYSE, EFFECT on audience, LINK back to question) paragraph for each element of C.L.A.M.P.S.

  2. At the beginning of the scene, there are kids wearing uniform but they aren't wearing it properly, which could connote a rebellious side to the students. Most of their ties aren't done up to the top, and their shirts are untucked, which shows that they aren't really bothered for school and don't really have an interest. It sets a sense of realism , as it represents the way students are actually behaving in school.
It is set in a school, props were used when the girl was getting beat up, they were in a classroom, and no students were paying attention which shows the realism of the real world. The setting used is the playground, you can see the students scattered around, in little groups. There is also, bullying taking place. Which again shows the realism, as students are getting bullied and no one is doing anything about it. The lighting is low key and gritty, which highlights the concept of british fils being of a low budget. Also, a famous young actor was in the film, Adam Deacon. He is a young brtish actor, who presents the young world very well, as he can stereotype young people very well.
