Class work

The lighting on Daniel Radcliffe’s face is quite light, which could connote that he the hero, but on the rest of his body the lighting is dark. This could connote that he may also be the villain. He is wearing a white shirt and a black waistcoat, which again could show that he’s good and evil.  His facial expression shows that he looks scared or even demented.

The entire picture is black and white, darker in some areas and lighter in others. It looks as if it’s set in a cemetery because of the large tree and the cross behind him. In front of the cross, there is a mysterious person in black, which links with the title ‘The Woman in Black’. The person at the back could be the woman in the title, which shows that the producer is trying to hint out what the narrative is about.  There is quite a lot of smoke in the background which gives a chilling feel and a dark and dangerous feel to it. The colouring is very dark and this is conventional with the thriller genre and gives a scary and frightening feel to it. The uses of whites, blacks and greys are really effective in the sense that it is conventional with a ghost story. The imagery raises questions about the character such as who is he? Why is he scared? Is he scared? Who is the person in the smoke? This makes the reader intrigued.

The positioning of the text is not in line with the rest of the text which is suitable for the genre because it is natural for the text to be in line with each line however as these lines are not in line it is unnatural just like a ghost is unnatural.

The way the clouds are lined up and the use of the tree and cemetery helps create that scary atmosphere, as cemeteries are known for being a scary place to go to, especially in the night. There aren’t many props used in this scene, as the setting helps to set the scary atmosphere.

Advert Analysis

The advert is promoting Beyonce’s new perfume, ‘Heat’. The focus of the ad is on Beyonce, with a small of bottle of the perfume next to her leg. The perfume bottle isn’t very big; this may be because they want Beyonce to be the focus. The main colour of the advert is red, which gives an impression of seductiveness, dirty and sex. She has direct mode of address, giving a seductive look and gives a stronger affect. She is the main focus of the advert, as she is in the middle. The lighting is low, making the audience focused on her and her body.

It is also difficult to not notice her chest because the slogan of the perfume ‘Catch the Fever’ is printed across her chest leading the viewer’s eyes back to this portion of her body. Allowing the viewer to see she feels sexy whilst wearing the perfume, as she feels comfortable enough to show her cleavage. She’s wearing a revealing red dress, which can interest a male audience but also a female, as they would want to look like her.

According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, this advert is a part of Esteem, love/belonging and Physiological, these three are all to do with ex and making people feel better. The connotations of red include lust, empowerment and pain. This is portrayed through her facial expressions, which have been enhanced by lighting.

Beyonce is not extremely thin in her ad and she isn't following popular fashions or looks in other ads such as thin and tall. I think this is an image that resists social norms of what women should look like. This will appeal to a larger female audience, as woman will buy the perfume despite their size. Also, Beyonce’s fans will be the perfume, males and females, as males will want their partners to be like and females will want to look/feel like her.

The title ‘Heat’ is in capital letters and bold, which makes it stand out as it is placed right at the top of the poster. It will catch the viewers’ attention, and make them wonder what ‘Heat’ could mean, for example it could relate to how people would feel if they wore the perfume. The text written across her chest draws attention to the fact that wearing the perfume could make you feel sexy.

The lighting on the child's face is dark, which connotes that he may be the villain in the movie but also it draws the audience in, as they will wonder if there is anything wrong with the child. The lighting used is high-key lighting, as the contrasts of light and dark creates mystery, as the child is dark, but the background is light. The child's eyes are lighter, which may connote he may be possessed, which would help draw attention towards the film. The lighting on the house in the background, is light, which connotes that the kid may live in that house, or have a connection with it. The left hand corner is lighter than the right side, which could suggest that the right side of the house is haunted, as the lighting is dark but also the child could be the cause of the house being haunted.

At the beginning of the trailer, there is a pitch black room and then a closet opens, with a monster jumping out. The lighting throughout the scene, could connote that the movie may be a horror, as the shadows create a mysterious atmosphere. When it gets to the middle, the lighting is low key, connoting that the characters are happy and its not a horror. When this happens it gives out mixed messages about the movie, which draws the audience's attention. The lighting when all the characters are in the hall way, connotes that it is a happy environment.

I chose Media Studies for A Level because I enjoyed it at GCSE and found it interesting. I hope to learn about the technical side of the media, such as how to make film trailers and tv adverts. My brother took A Level Media, he enjoyed it and he advised me to take it.
